Detroit Athletic club wedding: McKenzie & Pat

New Year’s Eve weddings are AWESOME, and McKenzie and Pat’s was no exception! I knew it was going to be a great wedding the minute I met them because they’re so gorgeous and nice, but it even exceeded my expectations. We began the day at the Detroit Athletic Club where everyone got ready. McKenzie looked gorgeous in her sleek gown, and I think she looks a lot like the actress Naomi Watts (except the younger version of her). The reaction by McKenzie’s mom and sister when McKenzie’s dad first saw her was super sweet (and what a great family they have!!). The entire DAC property is stunning, but when McKenzie told me that the Georgian Room is her favorite spot there, I knew we shared a similar style because it’s my favorite room too (grey tones, clean lines, symmetry, mirrors, french doors, chandeliers, etc.). So we did a lot of the photos in the Georgian Room, which was perfection, and then we headed off to the church, Saints Peter and Paul. I really love this church because of its white ceiling and pillars, unlike most Detroit churches that have a lot of dark wood. Their ceremony was absolutely beautiful and it’s adorable how Pat looks at McKenzie. Then we headed back to the DAC for some more photos and for the start of their super fun reception! Their decor was gorgeous with white, black, and gold (very clearly staying away from holiday colors or themes). I really loved their three-tiered gold and white cake with fun textures… well done, DAC! Emerald City Designs always does a spectacular job with the decor and flowers, and as usual they did a great job at this wedding. And it’s always fun to work with Evis of Visi Production and the Chateau Band. McKenzie and Pat’s awesome friends and family kept the party going strong, and the NYE countdown and balloon drop was incredible. Congrats to all who got to attend this amazing wedding, and super congrats to McKenzie and Pat!

Planterra wedding: Katie & Ryan

Winter Weddings at Planterra are often among my favorite, both because the venue is so amazing and because that venue always seems to attract my favorite type of clients, and Katie and Ryan were no exception. They’re both super laid-back, absolutely hilarious, and really really nice. They really didn’t want to see one another before the ceremony, but when they realized not doing so would mean only having nighttime photos together they changed their mind. BUT, they were so against it being traditional, and in their opinion a cheesy, first look moment and they wanted to do it differently, and so they gave each other a high-five when they first saw each other, which they said was so very “them”. They both looked amazing on their wedding day, and Katie’s gown was absolute perfection. It had been very grey and cloudy for weeks leading up to their wedding, but the sun came out for their day which enabled us to take some beautiful backlit outdoor photos. Their bridal party was all super nice, and the kids in their wedding were adorable. I always love the floral decor at Planterra, which of course is not surprising. Bluewater Kings Band rocked the dance floor for rest of the night. And I must give kudos to the videography crew, Killer Creations, because they were awesome to work with. Congrats to this awesome and gorgeous couple!!!

The Henry ford museum wedding: Alexa & Nolan

I love sweet couples such as Alexa and Nolan. L.O.V.E! The threat of bad weather loomed all day, but ultimately it all worked out. They got ready at The Henry Hotel , where Alexa transformed into an absolutely stunning bride, before heading to their ceremony at The Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, which is one of my favorite churches in Detroit because of it’s black and white checkered floors and great lighting. It was a beautiful ceremony that was then followed by a long bar stop for the bridal party (what a lucky bridal party, and perfect that it was the day of the Michigan vs. State football game) while I photographed Alexa and Nolan around Greenfield Village. Alexa’s parents got married at the chapel in Greenfield Village, so we were sure to stop there for a few photos. The Henry Ford Museum never disappoints because it has so many great spots for photos, and it was fun to wander around photographing this couple. Alexa and Nolan’s parents coincidentally danced to the same song on each of their weddings days years ago, so Alexa and Nolan chose that song for their first dance as well. I just love that. And Alexa and her dad were hilarious during their first dance when they changed into custom converse. Their Detroit-themed decor was all incredible, their flowers by Lashee Floral and Events were elegant, and it was fun that they opted for ice cream pops rather than a wedding cake. It was all-around a lovely day for a lovely couple and I’m so glad I got to be a part of it!

Detroit Athletic Club wedding: Erica & Derek

If there was a contest for it, Erica and Derek would hands-down win the award for the most easy-going and agreeable couple of the year! I mean, most of my clients are super awesome, but these two fully trusted me 1000%, were up for whatever I thought we should do for photos, and had nothing but huge smiles on their faces all day long. When I started the day photographing at their new house for Erica’s getting ready, I knew we were aligned in style because their house is grey and white with super awesome tile (I could not love grey and white any more than I do!). Their ceremony at Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church was not only beautiful but really meaningful since Erica’s parents got married at the same church. After the ceremony, we went to Hart Plaza for photos where the light was absolutely perfect. Erica and Derek are easy to photograph because they look so great, both separately and even better as a couple! And they had a super fun bridal party. Kudos to the ladies who were freezing while we took pictures but who dealt with it like champs! Their reception at the DAC was unbelievable. All of the decor was amazing, and their flowers by Petit Fleur Events were stunning, but I especially LOVED their gold, sparkly cake. It was wonderful to work together With Love Events, and their band BPM Mobile Entertainment/DJ Slimz rocked the house with the dancing, making for an all-around incredible wedding! Congrats, you two!

Royal Park Hotel wedding: Kay & Roy

So many things were perfection at Kay and Roy’s wedding! Aside from the obvious fact that they’re an adorable couple and Kay is STUNNING, their families were beyond nice and gracious the entire day. Also perfection was their choice of The Royal Park for their venue, as it has so many beautiful spaces to use. Their ceremony under the white-draped tent and their reception in the Conservatory felt like the perfect combination of intimate yet grand. I loved that they brought their pup, Gus, for photos with them and to be their ring bearer, and they had quite possibly the two cutest little twin girls as their flower girls. (My daughter is only five and yet being around these two cuties that day made me miss when my daughter was a bit smaller.) The colors they chose (pale pink and cream with a pop of dark red), were not only beautiful but also went so amazingly well with Kay and Roy’s elegant decor and are colors that I don’t see all of the time (and trust me, I see a LOT of the same colors used!). Their florist Floral Designs by Lori and Home Bakery each used those colors to create really gorgeous pieces. Their videographers, Voice Media Collective, were great to work with, and their DJ, Mike Staff Productions also rocked! Congratulations to this great couple!
