my new logo & look (goodbye chandelier)

5.10.10

Despite the positive feedback about my old chandelier logo, regardless of the fun with the "The Most Amazing Chandelier Contest", and even though many of my clients started thinking of me when they saw chandelier objects (cards, ornaments, etc.) and were kind enough to gift them to me, I'm moving on to a new look.

The reaction from many people has been "Why change it? I love the chandelier!!!". Well, that's actually the problem... too many people love chandeliers now. Things with chandelier silhouettes on them are EVERYWHERE. Cards at Papyrus, paper weights at Pier 1, and even wall decals at Target.

When I started using the chandelier silhouette as my logo 2 1/2 years ago, it wasn't trendy yet, in fact it barely existed. If it had been as trendy as it is now, I NEVER would have chosen it. At that time, I searched google images endlessly for an example online from which to work up a design. I searched 100 pages deep and didn't find any images of chandelier silhouettes, only product photos of actual chandeliers for sale at lamp stores. Now if you type "chandelier silhouette image" into google, you'll find hundreds of them.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm not bummed about the success of my beloved chandelier - it's kind of like when you've been following an awesome local band, seeing them in tiny intimate venues, and then suddenly they're super famous and you can hardly get a ticket to the show. You're happy for them, but you still prefer to remember the earlier better days.

So I really feel compelled to move on and evolve. When something is as trendy as the chandelier is now, not only is it unoriginal, but it's only a matter of time until it goes out of style. And the trendier something is, the more intensely it goes out of style. My prediction is that the chandelier silhouette craze is going to crash and burn soon, and I don't want to have my name next to one when it does. Timeless is the essence of my photography style, and my logo and look should be no different.

But the upside is that I LOVE the new look I created. While it's not a huge departure from my old look, it's more real and inviting. Every time I redo my logo I get a littler closer to the true essence of my style, and this feels as though I'm really getting to the core. And I kind of love the fact that it's a blend of graphic design and photography. I adore both of those art forms, and they go together like peas and carrots (a little Forrest Gump reference). And I kept my beloved lavender, but I've added mint and apricot. I felt it was time that lavender made some friends.

Before I show the new logo and look, here's a little tribute to my old logo...

And here's my new logo shown in my new website.

the local magazine trifecta!!!

3.19.10

So there are three main local wedding magazines in Detroit and, ever since I started my company, one of my goals was to be published in all three at the same time... and I'm super excited to report that it just happened! AND as a bonus I'm also published in the current issue of Ambassador Magazine, which usually doesn't feature weddings. I don't mean to toot my own horn... I'm just so happy to have so much free publicity at one time!!! But the real congratulations goes to the couples who are featured - it was their gorgeous wedding style which made the magazines choose them!

So here they are...
Ambassador Magazine: Kristin & Drew (forgive the yucky scan - scanners are crappy!)
Brides Michigan: Nicole & Mark
Metro Detroit Bride: Laurel & Anthony
The Knot Michigan: Audrey & Donny (featured previously on my blog here)

Thanks to all of you for having such great style! I LOVE having awesome clients!!! :)

and the winner of the 2009 "Most Original" contest is...

3.10.10

... Kelly & Dave!

Their farm style wedding was so uniquely cool, complete with awesome signs made from bark, a photo booth with quirky yet fun props, rings designed to look like wood, a fiddle player, and a goat! Yes that's right, a goat.

Kelly & Dave, you're awesome! Congrats! You've won a 12x18 gallery wrap of the image of your choice!

UPDATE: Kelly & Dave chose to have their gallery wrap be of the goat because they thought it would be an awesome conversation starter... "hey, why is there a goat on your wall?". LOVE IT!!!
